These activities offer the perfect balance of relaxation and exploration, connecting you with the islands' environment.
Below, you’ll find general information about these activities. Be sure to check this page regularly for updates on proposed activities, including registration details and schedules. Don’t miss the chance to make your visit truly unforgettable!
Whale and dolphin watching
The Azores are one of the best spots in the Atlantic Ocean for observing cetaceans in their natural habitat. Thanks to the islands’ volcanic nature, waters over 1,000 meters deep lie just a few miles from the coastline, allowing the observation of a great diversity of species (including deep-diving cetaceans) during a short 3-hour trip. Spring is arguably the best season to go whale watching in the Azores, as it holds the greatest species richness throughout the year. While year-round species like common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and sperm whales are the most frequent sightings, it’s also common to spot migratory baleen whales, such as humpback, sei, fin, and the majestic blue whale. Moreover, May offers the best chances to spot rarer species, like orcas, false killer whales and striped dolphins.

Bird watching
With around 40 species of nesting birds in the archipelago, São Miguel Island hosts nearly 10 endemic subspecies, such as the São Miguel goldcrest, the Azores' wood pigeon. The island is also home to two endemic species: the recently recognized Azores chaffinch and the jewel of São Miguel, the elusive Priolo (Azores bullfinch).
The Priolo, found only in small patches of native Laurisilva forests in the eastern area of São Miguel, is one of Europe’s rarest and most endangered birds, and has become a conservation icon of the Azores.
For those in search of migratory species or rare vagrants, visit the island's major lakes, such as Furnas or Sete Cidades, or explore the rugged volcanic coastline, where you may encounter a variety of wading birds, egrets and ducks. To spot seabirds, head to Mosteiros or Nordeste with a pair of binoculars in hand and look out for Cory’s shearwaters, as well as common and roseate terns.
Canyoning
Canyoning is an adventurous way to explore São Miguel's volcanic terrain. With its unique canyons and waterfalls, the activity offers an exciting way to discover the island’s wild beauty.
Hiking trails
If you are fond of hiking trails, these can take you to several beautiful places in the county, accessible only by foot.
